Random Riding & Thinking

I finally got out for a ride Saturday afternoon. With a break in the weather, several other riders were also out enjoying the second day of the new year on two wheels. I had planned to kind of take last week off or at least make it low key. I say "kind of" because I don't officially get vacations. Since I work from home I'm still responsible for the work flow even while "off". The plan was not to see too many customers in person and also prepare for the new year.

I ended up getting sick last week. I haven't had a cold in about two years. Last week made up for the gap in time. But Saturday was a good day to get out on the bike and just ride without a planned destination.

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to just take off around the country without a plan or itinerary? No specific time to be anywhere or be back home. I wonder how it would be to travel that way on a motorcycle. Everyday would be a different adventure in a new town.

I haven't been by this field in a while and I was surprised to find cabbage growing. Cabbage in January? I'm a city boy so I don't know much about growing seasons. With the threat of snow and/or ice always looming I wouldn't think January would be a big growing or harvest month. But to make sure I wasn't seening things wrong I did a Google search and found there actually is "January cabbage".

When you think about it, it's kind of amazing how food makes it from the fields to our dinner tables. We can freely go into any grocery store and buy food and it's abundant. Not everywhere in the world is that possible.

I hope you've been able to ride this new year. If not, I hope it's safe to ride soon. Get out there and find some cabbage.

Haven't had a chance to ride this year yet. Too many family commitments and having to take the bike with the car too seems redundant. Also going away on Saturday and don't wish to tempt fate by having something go wrong, which will ruin the plans. Because of our mountains there are not a lot of backroads left to discover, that is why I love going down to the Palouse, or Oregon.
It's hard to keep the secret but you already know that "Oregon has the best roads"

I hope you're going somewhere nice on Saturday. If so, looking forward to pictures.

The roads are pretty good here but we do have our share of not-so-good ones too. As you know the weather takes its toll but Oregon is good about repairing them fairly quickly.

Take care & have a nice trip Saturday.

  3. No riding, and no cabbage in Alberta. Still freezing cold and snowing up here. Headed to my assignment in Manitoba now, where there is more of the same. Riding reports like yours keep me from falling into a serious depression. Keep on rolling and writing about it. Cheers, Sonja

That's a bummer about your weather and no riding. I'm humbled to hear that my little writings might help in some way. Thanks for the encouragement. Have a safe trip to Manitoba.

We leave Saturday for Kona, Hawaii to a condo, hopefully with a peek of the ocean. Travelling light, only bringing two small P&S cameras and summer attire (Canon G10 & Lumix DMC-ZS3), wife has backup (Canon SD880is), + tripod, netbook +external drive. The ZS3 can shoot stunning HD video 720p30 , I purchased it for this trip so I call it my Hawaiian Camera.

  6. Repeat after me, Bobskoot. Oregon does not good have good roads. Oregon does not have good roads.

You should spend some time riding around Woodburn, Mike. There are cauliflower fields scattered about. They stink all year.

That'll be a nice trip! We went to Maui 10 years ago this month. I have a Lumix DMC-FX9. It has video but not HD. I haven't used the video in about 2 years. I hope you'll be posting from the condo...no, make that the beach.
Take care, have fun, and relax.

I was going to go into a little more detail about the reality of our country roads. The worst case scenario is falling into a sink hole.

Next time I ride to Woodburn I'll have to bring some ranch dressing. I like cauliflower too.
