A Friday Gift

It rained most of the day today in Portland. This afternoon I rode to the jail. I saw two other motorcycles out and even rode behind one for a while. It was a guy on a sports bike. He was cautiously going about 50 mph in an area of the country where 60 mph is common. Of course it was raining, but I still thought that his speed was on the slow side. On the curves we slowed but on the straights he kept it below 50. If it were a car I would have passed it but I got to thinking, maybe this is a good thing. Maybe I should be riding more cautiously than I have been in the rain. When I ride to the jail I feel confident and know the road so well but maybe I'm taking it for granted. Maybe this was a wake-up call. Or maybe I just got behind a slow guy... but on a sports bike? I think that might be an oxymoron.

On the way back home this evening while passing through the Jackson Bottom Wetlands I could see through the trees on my right a nice sunset developing. There are two fields on the other end of the Wetlands that are full of water. I figured the field on the west side might have some good photos to be had. I didn't realize that there would be a duck nicely placed on the lake.

In the spitting rain I took 18 shots by the side of the road. These scenes don't happen too often. I consider it a gift from the good Lord.

  1. lol - I think you found a rider who's even slower than me, but then I'm only slow in the corners. Straights are easy peasy. More nice shots. The rain on the seat shot has some nice tones to it and makes a very pleasant photo.

Hasn't the sky been great lately! I love all the colors in the morning and again at evening. Your wetlands scene is very pleasant, and the duck is a nice blessing. One tiny detail can sure add a lot to a scene.

So somebody drives by and sees this guy on a bike, out in the rain and thinks "poor guy", and all the while your getting a nice blessing from God and having a great time in the rain. Funny how these things work.

  2. Sunrises and sunsets have been nice lately. The clouds have been opening just right.

You've probably had someone stop and ask if you're okay when you've pulled off the road. Other bikers especially tend to do that. But when they see a camera, a sunset, and a duck they know everything is okay. ;)

  3. I had to laugh at this post Mike. I was thinking...I wonder how many times a guy was behind me in the rain thinking...why's this guy going so slow? hahaha! Was it a girl? I'm a big believer that the Lord puts things out there for a reason and I think it was the right call, by you this time, to wonder why the slow ride.
The sunset was beautiful and wow what great shots you got!

  4. Hi Eve,
It was a guy. He went by when I was turning onto the road and I got behind him. He not only was going on the slow side but he also kept a lot of distance behind the cars ahead of him. So I really think he was being cautious which got my attention.

  5. Mike:

maybe he had tires with no tread. I like to go slow, it gets so tiring having to turn around all the time to grab those scenic shots.

  6. Bob,
His rear tire looked good - I saw it at one of the stop signs we made. I only noticed it because overall his bike was nice looking with a big rear tire.

I know what you mean about having to turn around for a photo. I'm so use to this route to the jail that I feel I know where the good spots are. That's another caution for taking things for granted. Just when you think you know most everything, up pops a surprise photo-op!

  7. You took 18 shots beside the road? I hope you called a taxi to finish the journey. ( of course, I know you wouldn't really do that! ) You went golfing in mud puddles, didn't you?

Awesome pond photo, by the way. You knew I'd eventually get serious, didn't you?
